Animation, Mood, and Sound Test
Modeling, texturing, lighting, sound, and animation test.
Modeling, lighting, texturing, and animation were done in Cinema4D with the Redshift render engine. The clothing was modeled and simulated in Marvelous Designer. Mixamo was used for rigging and obtaining motion capture footage. The music was done by me on my guitar with some editing in After Effects
The project started with designing the character. Here is the final design.
At this stage his clothing was modeled and simulated, along with his body and clothes being textured, and the room he is in was built.
This is a close-up of his face. Instead of modeling a mouth and eyebrows, I used a technique where a drawn image was layered onto the procedural skin texture. When shown at this proximity it looks good, but there are some errors when shown from a distance.
I was very keen on using the Redshift render engine because of its subsurface scattering capabilities, something that doesn’t really exist in the standard Cinema4D render engine. You can see this exemplified in the edges of his hands in the shot, where the light bleeds through the hand and comes out in a more red hue.
The final lighting was used an atmosphere to provide some volumetric lighting. The pattern on the wall is projected from windows behind the camera with area lights and an hdri shining through them. This scene is all horizonatla motion so having the windows project a line of lights across the wall helps in directing the viewer’s eyes.
This shot is outside the hallway through one of the windows, the viewer being outside and the character being crammed into a smaller space on the screen helps compliment the sad droopy walk. It is also a good example of the color grading in effect, splitting the scene into pale yellows and cold blues.
The volumetric lighting provides an atmosphere for the light to shine through, which in this case split the scene on a diagonal, directing the view down towards the character and confining him to the darker side of the hallway.
Overall this project was meant as practice in both the technical skills of modeling, texturing, rigging, and animating a character, and in using lighting, editing, and cinematography to convey emotion and appeal in the animation.
