My v60 Technique

About making pour-over coffee and the meditative process it can become.

Backgrounds

I used a limited palette and simple layouts to try and capture the light and freeing feeling of the pour-over coffee ritual, while still framing the actions clearly.

Storyboards

I learned a surprising amount about storyboarding through this project despite the deceivingly simple subject matter. Quite a few changes were made during the animation stage to better represent the easygoing pace I was aiming for, however, the original storyboards shown here do still highlight the short’s focus on clearly staging subtle actions to bring out the appealing nature of careful hand animation which supports overall themes of the short.

Designs

Here I worked out the design of the generally unseen character and his coffee mug for the sake of establishing the palette and style of the short. Like with the backgrounds, a limited palette and more simplistic style was chosen, while still retaining an amount of realism required to convey the subtly of the motions featured in the short.

Planning

It was helpful to visualize the process with aids like this blueprint of the imaginary kitchen location. With this being my first 2D narrative short I found it challenging at first to find each camera angle without the aid of 3D. However, with some drawings and exaggerated acting in my kitchen, I quickly acclimated to this new workflow.
